Bo

The quarterstaff (or rokushakubo) is a staff made of hardwood approximately six feet in length and tapered at both ends. Its ends were tapered so the force they transmitted into the target was maximized over the smallest area and thereby rendered more effective. The staff was smooth to make it comfortable to handle and also to prevent it from being easily grasped by the opponent.

Its length is governed by the ease with which it can be wielded by the average person. It must have enough mass to be capable of inflicting injury and yet be light enough to be moved quickly.

It was used primarily to carry containers on each end with the Bo centered across the shoulders. Roku means 'six', shaku is a unit of measurement of about one foot in length, and Bo means 'staff'. Techniques include; striking, jabbing, parrying, blocking, and deflecting.
